You know the feeling when you have fallen asleep in an awkward position on the couch, and the moment you wake up you feel like your neck has completely come detached from the rest of your body and you can’t move in any direction? We’ve all done it! 

So what exactly happened? Simply put,  some of the joints in your neck got stuck and have now lost some of their range of motion ie. movement. The muscles in the neck spasm up as a protective measure to stop you from injuring the neck further. In order to relieve the stiffness we need to work on the joints without using the muscles. Remember – the muscles are tight because they are trying to protect the joints so we don’t want to release the muscles in this case as this could cause further injury to the neck.
